Duralac Green 115ML
Protecting your boat's bolts, rivets and plates from corrosion above water
Most people are familiar with Galvanic Corrosion below the waterline, the rusting and breakdown of metals on submerged marine equipment; such as thru-hull fittings, anodes, outboard engines and props over time. Did you know it may also dramatically effect metals above water?
Galvanic (sometimes also referred to as electrolytic) corrosion is an electrochemical reaction where two metals with different levels of reactivity are mechanically joined, and the softer of the two metals will deteriorate faster in a conductive environment. A good example being aluminium and stainless steel.
This may result in ugly staining of the surface, bubbling or pitting of the metal around the adhesion, through to complete structural failure if left to corrode. For applications such as aluminium spars and fittings on a steel mast, the implications can be expensive or even dangerous.
Duralac Green is a free flowing, elastic paste that forms a barrier where the two dissimilar metal surfaces contact, and will prevent or minimise the reaction and subsequent corrosion. Salt spray is a conductive solution (an electrolyte), and areas such as between alloy plates, bolts or rivets are subject to weakening if not protected. The product also protects metals in contact with wood, synthetic composites, leather and rubber.
Duralac Green is available in a handy 115ml tube (or larger tins) supplied ready for use, and is best applied with a brush. The product stays tacky for a considerable period, before setting and forming a protective and highly adhesive layer. The advantage of Duralac over other corrosion inhibitors is the very low water absorption properties, and tough and flexible seal, even over bends. Duralac Green is Chromate free
